“Learning the best international practices is a crucial aspect of my professional activity”
This edition of the Career Blog features Nural Asgarov, Lead Specialist at the International Relations Department of the Azerbaijan Energy Regulatory Agency (AERA). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from ADA University and a Master’s degree in Human Rights from the University of Bristol, UK. Additionally, he obtained a qualification in Law from BPP University, UK.
Nural Asgarov joined AERA as a Specialist in 2022 and currently serves as a Lead Specialist.
How would you describe your work at AERA?
As outlined in our department’s work plan, my activities at AERA involve building cooperative relationships with international organizations and relevant institutions across different countries, as well as researching and exchanging international regulatory practices. Moreover, organizing meetings, seminars, conferences, and other events with international partners is an integral part of our work.
What are your favorite aspects of your job?
One of the most favorite aspects of my job is the opportunity for continuous enhancement of my knowledge and skills. Apart from gaining experience in international relations, I continually acquire new knowledge in energy regulation. Since my first day at the Agency, along with my activities to expand international cooperation and knowledge exchange, I have been working to enhance my expertise in energy regulation.

What do you consider important in your professional activities?
I believe proficiency in foreign languages is crucial in our field. Ability to establish direct communication in a foreign language is extremely important for employees of the international relations department, as this enhances communication effectiveness and facilitates swift negotiations. Knowledge of foreign languages also provides you with a wide information base, enables you to analyze various sources and always stay informed. Moreover, studying innovations and developments in energy regulation, as well as the best international practices are crucial aspects of my professional activity. Therefore, I actively participate in relevant seminars, conferences, and training sessions organized by the Agency.

What is the best career advice you have ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to consistently work to improve my professional knowledge and skills. Indeed, being inclined towards new knowledge is crucial for achieving long-term success.

What are the advantages of working at AERA in your opinion?
I believe the professional environment at AERA can be beneficial especially for young professionals starting their careers. In my day-to-day experience, we encounter cases when there is a need to address technical challenges in energy regulation. With the Agency experts’ support, we overcome such issues together through team efforts. Furthermore, I believe the trust and support extended to young professionals by the management can be beneficial to them.
